A Benefit for Children's International
Targeted Sponsorship in Chibolya, Zambia
In slums on the outskirts of Lusaka, Zambia, tiny crumbling cinder block homes line twisting dirt roads where families live in squalor and deprivation. There are few schools for tens of thousands of children. And most parents have no formal means of support since jobs are lacking; they rely instead on vending a variety of items to earn just enough to acquire food every day.
With such low incomes – $30 a month, on average – they have trouble affording basic medical care and education, as well as other important necessities. Since 2004, sponsorship has been an important safety net for thousands of children, providing for basic needs while paying particular attention to addressing their medical and dental care, nutritional needs and helping expand their educational opportunities through the expansion and support of community schools, teacher training and the provision of classroom materials.
In just a few short years, a positive tide has begun to sweep through Kanyama, where our first community center in Zambia is located. And now we’re seeing the same optimism starting to rise in the people of Chibolya, a neighboring community where our second community center has been built, serving nearly 10,000 children and their families with health and dental care, nutritional assistance, educational support, material aid and much more.
